16,000 and counting

December 28, 2005 · Leave a Comment

I did a good post over at WritingUp on how I increased traffic to my site. I’ve called it How I Put My Site On Steroids. Here’s an excerpt:

I?ve previously given several good reasons why freelance writers should have a website. Once you?ve got that showcase for you and your work, you?ll need to make sure that people see it. When I launched doublehdesign.com in June 2005, I had 26 unique visitors (and I knew most of those by name) and a paltry 757 hits. By the end of December 2005, that had risen to 472 unique visitors and more than 16,000 hits. How did I do it?

If you want to find out more, head over to my WritingUp blog.

The Secret of the Vertical Blog Tunnel

December 24, 2005 · Leave a Comment

This is another great post from Mitchell Allen about how to keep your posts in the limelight so they get read as much as possible.

Write. Share. Earn. It is prioritized for each and every one of us. We understand the Write and the Earn, but are we failing to focus on the Share? Well, that should change. When you understand the marketing model, you can see that sharing is the linchpin that keeps the cart tethered to the horse.

This post is worth a read for every blogger.

The War of Wordcraft

December 23, 2005 · Leave a Comment

Mitchell Allen has done a great post on The War of Wordcraft.

Weapons of Mass Construction

I use Microsoft Word 2000, Dictionary.com and Google. The dictionary and thesaurus in Word are pathetic, as are my outdated reference books of the same names. Thus, Dictionary.com and the related thesaurus get a good workout as I try to avoid repetition, clichés and lifeless words. I use Google to look up stuff (duh!)

Mitchell lists some great techniques for preparing well-edited, error-free blog posts. It’s worth a read.

Supersonic affiliate marketing

December 21, 2005 · 1 Comment

Ever heard of the superaffiliates? They’re a handful of people who have made megabucks from the internet. One of these is called Rosalind Gardner. Using advice in her Super Affiliate Handbook I’ve seen my site traffic increase tenfold in just three months, so I’m a big fan.

In her down-to-earth, sincere and often humorous style, Rosalind Gardner guides you through the entire process of building an affiliate marketing business on the ‘Net. To learn exactly how she does it, I highly recommend that you visit the Super Affiliate Handbook site.

So you want to podcast?

December 20, 2005 · Leave a Comment

I’ve been thinking about podcasting, but thought it would be difficult. Then I came across this post. Here’s what Noot54 has to say about it:

The biggest thing out there now is podcasts and I thought, hey, that must be difficult, and oh so technical… However, with a little time, effort, and poking around, I was able to get all the info and all the software free.

Check out my new blog

December 17, 2005 · Leave a Comment

I’ve got a new blog at writingup.com. It will concentrate on writing and writers’ resources. The site claims to be easy and profitable, allowing you to make money from your blog. Here’s what it says:

You write articles/blog entries on ANY subject you want Each time you write you should be writing between 100-500 words (between a paragraph and a page in length) It shouldn’t take you very long (10-30 minutes each time) You can write anything you want (reviews, facts, opinion, reporting, thoughts, …). You should try doing all of them. To maximize your earnings, you should write each day We will get visitors reading what you write We will get ads on the pages. We’ll both make money off the ads We don’t know how much money it will be, but we can tell you it will be a significant amount. Probably much more than you’re currently making from whatever job you have All you have to do is write to make money. We’ll do the rest. To get started making money you need to do 3 things: Create a Google Adsense account and tell us your publisher Id Create an account on this site Write in your blog

I’m giving it a try. I’ll keep you posted on how it turns out.

Hassle-free article distribution

December 17, 2005 · Leave a Comment

The word is that one of the best ways of building site traffic is by placing free to reprint articles on article directories. I recently discovered a free piece of software that takes some of the hard work out of the process. Article Distributor sends your articles out to sites using the Article Dashboard script. The list of sites (currently at more than 216) is updated every 30 days. Fill in a simple form and it automates the signup and submission process. The first time you do it, you’ll have to reply to hundreds of confirmation emails and then set up a pen name. After that, it’s quite simple – set up your article in the provided template and click on the sites you want to submit to. The only thing you’ll have to do is select a category and hit the submit button. Check it out!

How much should you charge for freelance writing?

December 14, 2005 · Leave a Comment

That’s the question I needed an answer to when I was submitting a bid for a project that would not accept an hourly rate. As usual, I turned to Google for an answer and found a few useful resources. An article by Neil Tortorella suggests a good way of working out what your overheads are so you can make sure you’re not the one absorbing the hidden costs of doing business. Even better, he’s created an Excel calculator which automates the process. More good advice from Neil is available on his site.

December 12, 2005 · Leave a Comment

I’ve just published four new articles on EzineArticles on Will Writing. One of the new services I’m offering is making people’s web content into free to reprint articles, with a link to their site and/or product. The articles can even be published under their name, if required. The articles below are a pilot of the service.
Will You, Won’t You: Why You Need A Last Will And Testament
Future Proofing: Why You May Need An Enduring Power Of Attorney
Advance Planning: The Advantages Of Living Wills
Planning For Probate: What You Need To Know

Site updates

December 7, 2005 · Leave a Comment

I finally decided it was time to ditch the old sitemap (courtesy of FreeFind) and do my own. It’s not very pretty yet, but I’m working on some CSS to jazz it up a bit. I’ve also added a new free article.
